What do you offer?
I use my insider experience and long-time media relationships, in addition to the new relationships created daily, to get authors widespread exposure on radio, television, the Internet, and in all kinds of publications, from magazines to daily newspapers. The goal is to increase visibility of the book and its author, to turn authors into newsmakers when appropriate, position them as experts in their field, and ultimately increase book sales. This can lead to new publishing deals, increased speaking fees, and professional opportunities for them.
Who are your clients?
My clients are book publishers and authors of non-fiction book. I focus on a number of different genres, including business—books about leadership, management, career and workplace issues; health—books on fitness, diet, and healing; and self-help or human potential—books about personal growth and personal change. See Clients and Books.
Do you work with self-published authors?
If the author has a great book, distribution, and a platform, then there is a lot I can do for a self-published author. For those who aren’t ready to hire a full-time publicist and are motivated to promote themselves, I established Book PR University. Book PR University is a series of classes, teleclasses, CDs, DVDs, and other activities and products for learning how to do it yourself. Book U gives participants the tools that teach them the skills to go forward and generate their own media campaign. The good news is that generating publicity isn’t rocket science or brain surgery. It’s a skill that can be learned, it just takes time. Book U is the best and least expensive way to learn book publicity dos and don’ts from a seasoned media insider. For those who aren’t ready to hire a full-time publicist and are motivated to promote themselves, I established Book PR University.
What kinds of results can an author expect from a publicity campaign?
That all depends on your PR goals, your budget, and the duration of the publicity campaign. Once I determine that we are a good “fit,” I put 100 percent of my energies into helping you accomplish your goals. Some clients want a bestseller as their main goal. Others wish to generate local interest in target media that will attract new clients to their business or practice. Some authors are looking for a level of celebrity that can lead to travel and keynote speaking opportunities. Still others want to build relationships with media, booksellers, wholesalers and other important contacts so that current and future products are given an opportunity Often, an author’s publisher hires me to intensively focus in on just a couple of aspects of the author’s publicity campaign, such as national television and radio. I tailor each campaign to the needs, wishes, and particular strengths of the client. To find out what my clients are saying about me, see What Others Are Saying.
How do you decide if you and an author are a good “fit”?
I ask myself three questions.
Do I love the material? I have to love it to promote it.
Do I think the material has a good “shot”? I can love a book but know that it’s not going to fly with the media. The media has to love it too. I’ve come to understand what works and what doesn’t, and to intuit what my media contacts are looking for.
Does the author have media charisma? Often in the media game, it’s not what you say but how you say it. Some authors do a great job presenting their material in ways that the media loves and the public understands. They are comfortable in front of a camera or microphone. If an author doesn’t have these innate abilities (and most do not unless they’ve had training), then he or she must be willing to get professional coaching to develop the skills necessary to be effective with the media.
Do the author and I have chemistry? Do I want to work with him or her and does he or she feel good about working with me? This is critical. Otherwise, what is the point?
How much do your services cost?
The fee for author publicity depends on the client’s budget, goals, and the nature and scope of our work. The fee is determined after we have talked and I have reviewed your material.
